High school students from Chicago’s South Side spent last week learning and experiencing entrepreneurship in science, engineering and green technology from some of the city’s most successful entrepreneurs and competed for Ford Blue Oval Scholarships at the 2nd Annual Future Founders Academy hosted by the Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center (CEC).

The week-long “Apprentice” style summer business camp was made possible in part by a newly-formed partnership of the CEC, Ford Motor Company Fund, and the SME Education Foundation. Twenty five students from eight Chicago Public Schools were immersed in entrepreneurship at the 2009 Future Founders Academy. The highly engaging week of programming provided a backstage pass to entrepreneurship in Chicago including thriving green-tech businesses, a leading technology corporation, emerging fashion designers, a gourmet pretzel manufacturer and much more. The Academy provided team building and individual leadership development opportunities and culminated in a business plan competition. Students gained important entrepreneurial skills including networking, sales, technology, critical thinking, financing and public speaking. The final competition resulted in four winning teams receiving Ford Blue Oval Scholarship awards totaling $35,000.

“Today’s workplace demands innovative thinking and an ability to independently create our own career path. The goal of the Future Founders Academy is to introduce students to the possibilities of an entrepreneurial career, and give them basic skills for creating a complete business plan,” said Scott Issen, Managing Director at the CEC.

“Ford Motor Company Fund is delighted to participate in an entrepreneurial program which fosters the development of real world skills in a fun learning environment,” stated Mike Schmidt, Director, Education and Community Development, Ford Motor Company Fund. “The Future Founders Academy’s focus on a positive hands-on approach to learning with an emphasis on math and science exemplifies the mission of the Ford Blue Oval Scholarships. Our participation in this Academy is one of the many ways that the financial resources of Ford Fund continue to make a difference in the lives of the South Side community that Ford has been a part of for over 100 years. We are committed to empowering the next generation of entrepreneurs with the resources that provide them and the community with hope for a brighter future,” Schmidt added.

Working with the Ford Motor Company Fund, the CEC developed curriculum based on sustainability, centered on a trip to the SMART HOME: Green and Wired exhibit now on display at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. The student entrepreneurs toured the SMART HOME exhibit selecting and researching one of its featured innovative green products. The students then developed an advanced business plan focused on sustainability, marketing of the product, technology and finances.

On June 19, student teams faced their final competition– vying for Ford Blue Oval Scholarships – with the presentation of their product’s business case to a panel of judges from the entrepreneurial community, Ford Motor Company, and the SME Education Foundation, among others.

Ford Blue Oval Scholarship criteria requires that a student is interested in pursuing a Science, Technology, Engineering or Manufacturing related career and plans to pursue a college degree. Scholarship dollars will be administered by the SME Education Foundation and be distributed through the student’s school’s Financial Aid Office.

Future Founders Academy

The 2009 Future Founders Academy is a continuation of the Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center’s Future Founders program that promotes entrepreneurship in partnership with the Chicago Public Schools on Chicago’s South Side. During the past nine months, 110 students from four Chicago Public high schools have received insight on creating and running businesses of their own. Throughout the school year, some of the region’s top entrepreneurs mentor and advise students as they develop business plans, culminating in an ‘American Idol’ style business plan competition at ESPN Zone.

In addition to the Ford Motor Company Fund, the Future Founders Academy is made possible by the Motorola Foundation, AT&T, Harris N.A., Smart Bet Charity and in partnership with the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship and the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce. The Academy includes students from eight South Side Chicago high schools: ACE (Architecture, Construction & Engineering) Technical Charter School, Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy, Chicago Vocational Career Academy (CVCA), Global Visions Academy, Edwin G. In 1983, Ford Motor Company entered into a Conciliation Agreement resolving the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOC’s) 1973 charge of discrimination against Ford Motor Company and the United Auto Workers. The provision of the agreement endowed specifi ed colleges and universities with funds to be used to provide scholarships in perpetuity for minority and female employees of Ford Motor Company and their eligible spouses and offspring. Under Ford Motor Company’s educational endowment and grants program, scholarship funds are made available annually to meet their designated purpose.

Application Deadline is February 26, 2010, by 5:00 p.m.

ELIGIBILITY:
1. The Ford Motor Company Endowed Scholarship was created to fund, on a perpetual basis, a limited number of scholarships
for women and minorities (individuals who are Native American/Alaskan, Asian or Pacifi c Islander, African American/Black, or
Hispanic/Latino).

2. Preference is given to:
• Minority and female employees of Ford Motor Company
• Minority and female children of Ford Motor Company employees
• Minority and female spouses of Ford Motor Company employees

3. Scholarship applicants must base their application on their relationship to a permanent, active, full-time employee of Ford Motor
Company. Applicants should not base their application on their relationship to a temporary or retired employee or intern. To apply,
complete and submit the application on the next page.

4. Complete applications must include a copy of a recent pay stub or a letter from the Human Resources department at Ford Motor
Company confi rming employment.

5. These scholarships are not need-based and may be awarded to only one member of a family with an established relationship with a
Ford Motor Company employee.

6. Scholarships are awarded to students who will be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program on the Ann Arbor campus during the 2010-2011 academic year.

7. If the applicant is an entering transfer student, complete academic transcripts showing all college-level course work must be
provided.

PLEASE NOTE:

• The 2010-2011 deadline for submission of the application is February 26, 2010, by 5:00 p.m. Applications will not be accepted after this date.
• Scholarship recipients will be notifi ed by March 31, 2010.
• This scholarship is available only to students enrolled on the Ann Arbor campus.

Ford Motor Company Awards $100,000 in Scholarship Funds to Student Entrepreneurs

DETROIT, May 5 — The next generation of business leaders took home top prizes at the 2009 Ford HBCU Business Classic in Atlanta, GA on April 17. The business plan competition was held at Clark Atlanta University and showcased the best and brightest minds from Historically Black Colleges and Universities around the country. Student teams from Florida A&M University and Howard University were awarded $100,000 in scholarship prizes for their groundbreaking business plans.

Students were challenged to test their entrepreneurial ambitions before a panel of judges, comprised of influential entrepreneurs from the business community. Each team was scored on the viability of their business plans, their overall presentation and the business plan’s potential benefit to the community.

“As an HBCU graduate I know firsthand the impact that programs such as the Ford HBCU Business Classic can have on students,” said Crystal Worthem, Multicultural Marketing Manager, Ford Brand. “The real-world solutions presented during the competition are extremely timely and will have huge positive implications on communities and businesses nationwide. We are excited to pave the way for this next generation of business leaders, and gain their perspective about the current economic situation and solutions for the domestic auto industry.”

Students from Florida A& M University in Tallahassee, FL, submitted their business plan for VMed LLC, and received the grand prize honors for their life changing concept. Their company has developed a plan to utilize technology to simplify people’s health care needs. As the grand prize winning team, the students from Florida A&M received a total of $50,000 in scholarship funds — $35,000 in personal scholarships and $15,000 for their university.

The first runner up team, from Howard University, presented a plan for AutoCard, a student printing company with licensing rights to incorporate university logos on student business cards, and received $30,000 in scholarships — $20,000 in personal scholarships and $10,000 for the university. Hajj Media, also from Howard University, took home second place honors for a plan to offer multitier marketing solution for local small businesses. The team received the $20,000 – $15,000 in personal scholarship funds and $5,000 for the university.

Finalists presented their business plans to the judges to prove their plan could be converted into a viable business strategy. The judges for the competition included George Fraser, Chairman & CEO of FraserNet/author; Boris Kodjoe, actor/entrepreneur; Pat Lottier, CEO of Atlanta Tribune; Will Packer, Chairman & CEO of Rainforest Films/producer; and Dr. Randal Pinkett, Chairman & CEO of BCT Partners/author. The event was hosted by Kevin Frazier, TV anchor and entertainment correspondent.

To enter the competition, students submitted a business plan via the Ford HBCU Business Classic Website at www.FordHBCU.com. The plans required several key elements to be considered for the competition, including type of business, product or service, target market and competition, and general operations. The five finalists were selected from the entries by SCORE – Counselors to America’s Small Business.

The Ford HBCU Business Classic finalist competition will also premiere as a TV One special in July 2009. The “Ford HBCU Business Classic Special” will feature candid moments with the student teams as they prepare for the competition, highlights from each business plan presentation as well as the celebrity judges’ selection process to determine the 2009 winners. Ford HBCU Business Classic

The Ford HBCU Business Classic launched in the fall of 2004 in response to Ford’s recognition of a need in the Black business community to educate and develop the next generation of entrepreneurs. It was designed to offer students the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world entrepreneurial experience. The competition was opened to HBCU students nationwide, and received business plan submissions from students from more than 80 percent of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Society of Manufacturing Engineers Ford PAS Scholarships offer three $10,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who have also participated in the PAS program. The Ford Partnership for Advanced Studies (PAS) program fits high school students into informal internship or mentor situations where they may observe and learn from business people and academics. PAS emphasizes the underrepresented students and promotes their education in the sciences, engineering, math and technical fields.
The Henry Ford Academy Scholarship goes to one outstanding student alumni of the Ford Academy. The Academy is a “charter school” in Michigan that offers an innovative education that engages students in a range of courses that include those oriented to “life in the 21st century.” The scholarship is $10,000 to be put toward a four-year undergraduate program.
AFS-USA Ford PAS Scholarship provides a fully funded study abroad opportunity through an AFS program.
Ford Motor Company/American Indian College Fund Corporate Scholars Program recognizes Native American, Alaskan or Hawaiian students who wish to pursue math, technology, business, or the sciences. Candidates compete for $10,000 and must prove financial need.
Ford Motor Company Tribal Scholarships offer a maximum of $5,000 to those financially needy Native American students heading into the sciences, math, technology or teaching.
HSF/Ford Motor Company Scholarship Program awards Hispanic students with a $2,500 scholarship. Candidates must be graduating high school seniors enrolling in a four-year degree program in the U.S.
