You are invited to apply before April 15 for the Lester G. Benz Memorial Scholarship for Journalism Study.

This scholarship is intended to pay a maximum of $500 for actual tuition, room, board and transportation costs.

Who is eligible?

All high school journalism teachers and newspaper and yearbook advisers who have had at least six semester hours of journalism courses and a minimum of four years of teaching experience and advising school publications; who are currently teaching a journalistic writing class; and who plan to return to the high school classroom and media advising next year to apply the information gained in the course work taken as a result of this scholarship are encouraged to apply.

The scholarship program’s objective is to identify and reward experienced journalism teachers and publication advisers (as defined above) who seek the opportunity to upgrade their journalism skills, teaching methodologies and advising techniques.

What is required?

In addition to the application form, each applicant is required to submit two letters of recommendation that will attest to their journalism teaching skill, publication advising, quality of the journalistic writing course(s) the applicant teaches and the quality of the publication(s) the applicant advises. The letters of recommendation should come from any of the following sources:

  • Superintendent
  • Principal
  • Vice Principal
  • Department Chairperson
  • Regional or state scholastic press association director
  • Scholastic journalism workshop director
  • A faculty member of a School of Journalism or Dept. of Journalism from whom the applicant has taken a journalism course recently (last 2-4 years)

Letters of recommendation may be placed in sealed envelopes, but must accompany the journalism teacher/publication adviser’s application forms.

It is the intent to select a journalism teacher/publication adviser who plans to take course work that is definitely beyond the introductory level. Descriptions of courses or workshops should be submitted with the application to help inform the selection committee about the plan of study.

The application deadline is April 15.
