Lexus and Scholastic have kicked off the third year of their Lexus Eco Challenge to offer environmentally aware students and educators rewards for their efforts.
The contest requires teams of five to 10 middle and high school students and their teacher advisors to pinpoint an environmental issue, devise a plan to fix it and report their progress.
Teams may choose to address issues in one of two categories: land/water or air/climate.
Mark Templin, Lexus group vice president and general manager, said the competition aims to “[make] a difference” by “inspiring the next generation to become responsible stewards of the environment.”
The program will grant 16 teams – eight from high schools and eight from middle schools – $10,000 in scholarship funding to be divided between the students, their advisor and their school.
Winning teams will have the opportunity to compete against one another in the contest’s Final Challenge, which will give 14 teams $15,000 in grants and scholarships and $30,000 to two grand prize teams.
Teachers wishing to further their education may wish to participate in this competition to integrate green aspects into their lesson plans and fund higher education. Online masters programs may give busy educators the opportunity to gain an online degree without disrupting their busy schedules.
