Tom Bradshaw has won the inaugural Carrera Cup GB Scholarship programme and will now receive £50,000 towards racing in the championship next season.
The Blackburn driver – runner-up in this year’s Henderson Formula Palmer Audi Championship, was part of an initial shortlist of six drivers chosen by Porsche to undergo fitness training and testing over a two day assessment at Silverstone: “The fitness assessment was tough,” said Bradshaw. “The Porsche took a little time to get used to but once I did, my pace was good and it was great fun.” With two scholarship places up for grabs, Tom was chosen along with Caterham driver Lewis Hopkins to take the main prize.
FPA Shootout winner Aaron Steele was one of the finalists to miss out, although he will get the chance to make a race appearance in the VIP Carrera Cup GB car next season.
FPA frontrunner Bradshaw has now decided to follow his heart into sportscar racing and sees a relationship with Porsche as the best way forward to progress his career: “If I can do well in the Carrera Cup GB, then I could go on to the Porsche Supercup,” said Bradshaw. “My ultimate aim would be to race at Le Mans and become a paid sportscar driver.”
The 2008 FPA Championship was one of the most exciting in its 11-year history and Bradshaw was part of a three-way fight for the title going into the final round, although he eventually had to settle for the runner-up spot behind Jason Moore: “I’m really happy with the way this year has gone on the whole,” said Bradshaw. “I’ve learnt a lot, and really feel I’ve progressed as an all round package.”
Despite leaving single-seater racing behind, Bradshaw was quick to point out that FPA was the best place to launch his career: “I have to thank everyone who works as part of the Formula Palmer Audi team,” said Bradshaw. “It really is a professional and competitive championship. I have really enjoyed my time in FPA.”
